Common Foot Problems
Placed alphabetically Chiropodists and Podiatrists treat the following common conditions:
ankle sprain, arthritic feet (arthritis), athletes foot, biomechanics, bunions, calluses and hard skin, chilblains, corns, diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers, dry skin, elderly feet (aged feet), footcare and footcare advice, flat feet, ganglions, gout, hammer toes, heel pain and fasciitis, high arched feet, nail damage and disease, sporting feet (and sports injuries), sweaty feet, toe deformities and verrucae (the plural of verruca).
This is by no means a fully comprehensive list!
Biomechanics
Biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of living organisms. A chiropodist or podiatrist will use biomechanics to diagnose problems associated with movement, such as an abnormal walking pattern in a child or adult, or a sporting dysfunction in an active person.
It may be then possible to use the principles of biomechanics to prescribe or manufacture a special insole, sometimes called an orthotic, to alter the walking or running pattern of the person wearing the insole.
Quality of Life
Much of the work of the Chiropodist and Podiatrist is concerned with problems effecting the quality of people’s daily life. It can be extremely painful to have problems such as a corn on the foot or dry cracked skin around the heel, or a previously unresponsive verruca.
The chiropodist is trained to alleviate the pain associated with these problems and take steps (if you pardon the pun!) to eradicate them.
An action as simple as cutting toenails which may be ingrowing or discoloured or mishapened (or frequently, may simply be unreachable), can really make the difference for some people between leaving the house or becoming house bound.
